The Mid West Region's Growing Fresh Water Challenge
Western Australia's Mid West climate is drying, while the population is rapidly growing¹. The Yarragadee Aquifer System, the region’s primary water source, is estimated to be fully allocated by 2032². Our region's critical winter rainfall has decreased by 24% since the 1970s³.
Geraldton reached a record 49.3°C in January 2025⁴. BOM classifies the region as facing severe water stress conditions⁵, placing the region under 'Permanent Water Restrictions', enforced with heavy daily penalties⁶.
These factors are slowing regional growth and wellbeing. Housing construction is limited to around 300 homes per year in many areas, with scheme water supporting only a finite number of new connections⁷.
Fresh Water Sustainability
Local residents and businesses can now access affordable, healthy fresh water at scale. Our ocean water desalination plant delivers great tasting water free from minerals, hardness, scaling issues, and occasional elevated nitrates or salinity, often found in our current water sources.
Also catering to industry and agriculture, our supply is designed to meet the high-volume needs of farmers, agribusinesses, and light to heavy industrial operations.
Our Fresh Water Future
Fresh Water WA provides an alternative reliable fresh water source through our green energy, solar powered desalination system. We use our abundant clean ocean to produce high quality ADWG-compliant potable fresh water that's versatile for drinking, households, agriculture and industry.
We distribute direct to market via tankers, while offering convenient customer self-pickup options. Our fixed pricing for an unlimited volume saves our customers significantly year round.
A Drought Proof Fresh Water Source
Beginning with million of litres a day and scaling beyond, our unrestricted supply empowers developers to release new land, supporting essential housing projects, and regional growth.
Our Quality Advantage
Our water exceeds Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) and NHMRC standards, delivering trusted ultra-pure quality. Sourced from the Mid West’s pristine ocean and purified via advanced reverse osmosis, it removes >99.9% of salts, heavy metals, microplastics, PFAS, nitrates, and pathogens.¹⁸
It retains balanced essential trace minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium) at safe levels for optimal hydration,¹⁹ with no unnecessary additives or by-products making it gentle and ideal for infants, children, immune-sensitive individuals, and those concerned about nitrates or microbes.²⁰
In contrast, Geraldton’s local supply has high TDS (800–1,200 mg/L), elevated sodium (244 mg/L) exceeding aesthetic guidelines, affecting taste and odour.¹⁸,¹⁹ It’s classified as ‘hard’ with significant calcium / magnesium,²⁰ and nitrates can reach 30–40mg/L, generally safe for adults but a potential risk for infants and pregnant women.²¹
WA’s Mid West Fresh Water Update - March 2026
The Yarragadee Aquifer System, for the moment, remains a reliable freshwater foundation for Western Australia’s Mid West. This deep aquifer supports the Geraldton-Dongara Regional Water Supply Scheme, delivering high-quality groundwater to Geraldton, Dongara, Port Denison and nearby areas via borefields such as Allanooka.
Monitoring confirms production-zone levels stable within normal ranges. Gradual drawdown from abstraction and reduced recharge continues, but levels stay well above critical thresholds. The aquifer’s confined, resilient nature ensures supply security for the foreseeable future.
Rainfall 2015–2025 has varied, with many winters below average, consistent with the south-west WA cool-season decline of 16 - 20% since the 1970s, which has accelerated recently. Lower recharge slows recovery.
Projections indicate gradual winter rainfall decline over the next decade, with higher temperatures increasing evaporation and demand. These trends are monitored and incorporated into planning for sustained reliability.
Greater Geraldton’s population is 47,000, projected to reach about 49,300 by 2046. Statewide migration supports Mid West economic activity and modestly raises residential and urban water demand.
Regional use is around 75 gigalitres per year, nearly all groundwater. Medium-growth scenarios forecast roughly 150 GL/year by 2050, driven by housing, agriculture and potential industrial or mining expansion. Some sub-areas have reached or exceeded sustainable limits since the mid-2010s, requiring careful management.
The supply-demand gap is addressed through a balanced strategy. Short- to medium-term security is assured for the Geraldton - Dongara scheme and towns. For longer-term growth, agencies pursue diversified, rainfall-independent sources.
Seawater desalination provides climate resilient coastal supply. Expanded wastewater recycling in Geraldton boosts non-potable reuse for irrigation and industry, conserving potable groundwater. Murchison upgrades enhance inland quality and reliability. Efficiency programs and targeted restrictions, backed by community support, optimise resources.
WA Government Announces $52.9 Million Regional Water Source Fund - But No New Water for Years
In the 2026–27 State Budget, the Cook Labor Government announced a $52.9 million Regional Water Source Fund to support water planning and investigation across regional Western Australia.
Importantly, this funding is allocated for studies, feasibility work, and long-term planning - not for the actual construction of new water supply infrastructure.
The government’s current strategy continues to rely on tapping the Yarragadee Aquifer, which is already under severe pressure and is forecast to be fully allocated by 2032.
While the fund signals growing recognition of the Mid West’s water shortage, it does not deliver any additional fresh water in the short or medium term.
Fresh Water WA's Logo
The FWWA logo combines a classic teardrop symbolising fresh water, with an ocean wave held within it, representing our limitless ocean water source. Together they capture the essence of our sustainable reverse osmosis process.
